// FutsalFutsal: The indoor giant?Futsal, often referred to as indoor football, has a large and increasing presence across Canberra, Australia and the globe. With transfers for the best players across the world reaching $3 million and professional leagues in many countries including Spain, Brazil and Thailand Futsal provides wonderful opportunities for our players. Canberra is at the forefront of Futsal in Australia. The National Championships are held here every year in January when teams from Australia and the Pacific compete in a wonderful atmosphere with Finals held at the Australian Institute of Sport. ACT Cobras, the ACT Men’s Premier side are the National Champions again and continue to set the standard for the rest of the country. Canberra has thousands of players, boys and girls, playing Futsal all year round. And like the outdoor game our National Representative sides have a large number of Canberrans in their squads. Jason Lancsar, Robbie Hooker, Elliot Zwangobani, Danny Macor, Trent Flanigan and Angelo Konstantinou are just some who have represented their nation playing World Cups and internationals in Brazil, Malaysia, Japan and of course here in Canberra and we have a number of current local youth players participating in the Futsalroos train on squad. To watch some of these in action head to the ANU gym on Friday nights where the men’s premier league competition is played. Futsal expected to boomAustralia moved into the Asian Football Confederation on January 1, 2006, and it will have a significant impact on the local indoor game in the coming years. With a televised National League expected to start in Australia in the near future, an Asia Football Confederation Champions Futsal League in the pipeline we expect to see further growth in the game in the coming years. Amazingly Danny Macor and Trent Flanigan recently played for the Futsalroos against Brazil in the KL5’s in Malaysia. Over 320 million TV viewers across the World watched the game. With so many young players taking up the game the standard of play continues to rise. Capital Football Academies and local club sides regularly travel to Asia and South America to match it with the best.
